Fake tech support (virus, Microsoft, remote access)
How it works
- A warning window with sound or a call claims to be “from Microsoft” or “from technical support”
- You are told your device is infected and your data is in danger
- You are asked to install AnyDesk, TeamViewer or another remote-access app
- With access to your screen, the scammer opens your bank app and empties your accounts or asks for a “fee” for the repair
Warning signs
- A call or a message you did not ask for, about your “virus”
- Pressure and a phone number from a banner
- A request to install a remote-access app
- Payment requested through gift cards or a transfer
What to do
- Close the window or hang up. Big companies do not call you to announce viruses.
- Do not install any app at the request of someone who contacted you.
- If you already gave access: disconnect the device from the internet, delete the app and change your passwords from another device.
- Call your bank and ask it to check your accounts; then call 1911.
