Phone calls (fake police officer / fake bank employee)
How it works
- Someone calls claiming to be from the police, DIICOT, a bank or an “anti-fraud department”
- You are told your account is “under attack” or that you are involved in an investigation
- You are asked to move your money to a “safe account” or to hand over bank details
- The number shown can look exactly like your bank's real number (spoofing): do not rely on the number displayed!
Warning signs
- You are asked to keep it secret: “don't tell anyone, not your family, not the bank teller”
- An urgent, threatening or overly friendly tone
- You are asked for codes you received by SMS
- You are asked to withdraw cash and hand it to a “courier”
What to do
- Hang up. No explanations, no politeness.
- You call the bank, on the number on the back of your card, not on the number that called you.
- The real police do not solve cases by phone and never ask for money. Ever.
